Favignana, Marettimo and Levanzo

  • Egadi Islands

The Greeks called this island Aegusa but the island was named Favignana, after the Favonio (mening wind), during the Middle Ages.

The sea here is transparent and assumes of the splendid tonalities of Turkey, being compared to waters of the Caribbean. In fact, the sea has splendid islands createing a charming contrast with white walls of turf, that are thrown into the sea. Favignana is also ideal for the fans of underwater adventure, thanks to the presence of its founders, where numerous  species of marine life are present.

Favignana, termed “The Queen of the tuna farms”, calls visitor’s to visit the majestic tuna farm of Florio. Be awoken by the sounds of the sea, crashing down with its waves.  You can even observe the fisherman who go to sea for the “Mattanza”, tuna killing guided by the Rais.

In Marettimo island you can still feel that ancient sacred atmosphere, along the small silent streets of the town, scanning the faces of the islanders who devote their lives to the sea and who expect the answers to their questions to come from the sea as well. Rich in colors, and interesting founders helped make Marettimo a unique and fascinating place.

Those who come to Levanzo, must leave behind the uproars of the world, the hustle of everyday life, and the noises of the towns. Here life flows peacefully at a slow pace. Temporal  in dimension, having nothing in common with the bustle of the dry land, Levanzo is a special island.
