Three Sicilian street foods you’ll simply love

15 Apr 2015 Senza categoria @dmin

One of the most important things you certainly don’t have to miss when visiting Palermo and Sicily in general is local street food. No question the food you eat in Sicilian restaurants is delicious, fresh and you can have it while comfortably sitting at a table with a waiter bringing you all you want from the menu.

Having street food in Sicily is a completely different story. First of all, the food making. Often prepared by women (and men as well, sometimes) who learnt the recipe directly from their great grandmothers, they fully respect food traditions and choose the best local ingredients. Secondly, being served from street food sellers when you’re a tourist in Sicily means they’ll tell you what you need to know to experience a unique Sicily holiday (even though they don’t speak any English!)

As for Sicily street food, here are our top 3 Sicilian street foods you definitely need to try:

Arancina
It’s a fried breaded “rice ball” available in two different versions. “Alla carne” means it’s stuffed with ragu (tomato and meat) cheese and peas. “Al burro” instead, is simply stuffed with mozzarella cheese and ham.

Panelle

Panelle is made from a basic mixture of water and chickpea flour cooked into a porridge (like polenta), and then cooled until firm, cut into pieces, and fried in olive oil. Since it’s served on soft buns, like hamburger buns, it’s a perfect vegetarian alternative for guests at a barbecue. Try it! We’re sure you’ll love it right way!

Sfincione
It looks like a pizza, but it’s different. Thicker and softer than an ordinary pizza, Sfincione is topped with tomatoes, onions, a few anchovies and grated caciocavallotavola-calda cheese, seasoned with a dash of oregano. A slice of sfincione and a glass of white wine can definitely make your day.
